As with most marketing questions, it depends. But, if you are trying to rank in the first page or first couple pages of Google, the answer is most likely yes.
So, let’s say your website right now looks professional and gives a great representation of the products/services you offer. Maybe it’s five pages or so. I build starter websites like this all the time for clients. Rome wasn’t built in a day so typically I even recommend going this route and not jumping into blogging immediately. But, when you’re ready to maximize your online presence, it’s time to talk about blogging.
So, what good is a blog?
- A blog maximizes your online presence. Website don’t rank, pages do. So if you have five website pages, you don’t have much opportunity to rank for keywords. Let’s say you’re painter. Having a blog allows you to create pages for things potential customers are searching for online. For instance, “what type of paint should I use to paint kitchen cabinets”. Writing a blog on the subject means you are more likely to get website traffic and leads to your business.
- Get more leads. According to HubSpot, companies with 101-200 pages get 2.5Xs more leads than companies with less than 50 pages.
- Improve your website conversion rates. A blog proves to people visiting your site that you are an expert in your field, and your business is alive and well. According to HubSpot, companies that prioritize blogging experience a 13X increase in ROI.
- It humanizes your brand. A page about your services just cannot connect with people the way a blog can when you are able to share stories and insights with a more personal touch.
- Search engines love fresh content. Google rewards sites that continue to add content.
So all that sounds good. What else is there to consider?
I won’t sugar coat it, a blog is a big endeavor. You have to post articles frequently. Someone needs to be in charge it. You need a schedule that you stick to, just like your other commitments. You’ll have to come up with topics. And success (ranking in search engines) doesn’t happen overnight.
Think a blog could help your business grow? I’d love to talk!
